Putting Away Childish Things: My Foray into Lifestyle Design

So I’ve been reading Tim Ferriss’ 4-Hour Work Week off and on since December. I highly recommend it to all of you who want to  step away from the rest of the lemmings (adorable as they are) and step into the life of your dreams. This has been a long time coming, but I’m glad to say, things are finally “clicking”!

Like many folks, I’m really just quite frustrated with poverty. I know I just took a 5-year vow to be best friends with the beast, but I really *need* to pull in an extra $100-$150 each month to make ends meet. Of course I a) am not allowed to work more than 11 hours per week and b) am not even sure I’ll have time to work even those 11 hours. This means I need some sort of passive income. Totally doable.

As my friend and guru, Rosetta Thurman, told me, I  need to be getting paid for all the time I spend giving away information on Twitter for free. School (and Twitter) prevented me from launching head on into my idea. Okay, I was also still afraid that it wouldn’t do well. I mean, who pays for information that you can get for free? (wait for it…)

Nevertheless, I kept poking at things here and there, allowing myself to get stuck in the weeds of website design, etc. Then this week I hit Tim’s chapter on how to establish oneself as an expert. All the pieces began to fall together as I rode the train Thursday morning and I was literally unable to shut off the flow of ideas. I believe I sent myself no fewer than 10 idea emails that day. Ridiculous. And awesome.

Now that I’ve rambled on for far too long, here’s a little about the new phase in my life:

  • I’m seeking to have a 4-Hour Work Week: I strive to spend no more than 4 hours per week facilitating the growth of my company (stay tuned for the official launch event next month).
  • I have put myself on a TV fast until the day after I get to Chicago. I noticed that, if I turn the TV on when I get home or wake up, rather than music, I get a lot less done. This was, indeed, a “DUH!” moment. (Yes, this will also apply to Mama J, so that’ll be interesting. Remind me to tell her to bring enough reading materials. She’s not a big TV watcher, per se, but you know how it goes.)
  • I’ve already reduced the amount of time I spend on Twitter, kind of by force. But I’m fine with that, because I knew this would happen anyway, what with the move and school and whatnot. My plan is to keep strategically reducing and maximizing my time on social media. (But no worries; the same fun-loving Amanda will make appearances. I owe myself that much. :) )
  • I will continue to seek out examples from those who’ve inspired me over the years. I also promise to reach out for help.

Now that I’m back to reading, I can’t turn off the idea faucet. I’m kind of frustrated that I don’t have all my time to myself (I’ve still got the DC Youth Count to help with and there’s that pesky issue of packing my things for my move to Chicago), but I think it’s feasible to get at least one money-generating idea in place by the time I leave.

So, if you haven’t already, nab a copy of 4HWW for yourself on Amazon.  Oh, look! There it is!   ~      ~      ~      ~      ~      ~      ~      ~      ~      ~   >

Yeah! I need to add that book to my ever-growing list! I have started my side hustle but now I need to focus on maximzing my time because, like you, I don’t want to spend too much time on it or other distractions. Thank God I do not have cable! LOL

ha! i keep lamenting about how i wish i had cable when all of twitter starts live-tweeting hoarders. alas, i’ll be okay.

as for the book, it’s helping me put a lot of things into perspective. there is absolutely no reason that someone with this many ideas and knowledge of random-yet-helpful things shouldn’t be able to hustle up a sizable stream of nearly effortless income. once i got over my hangups about how that sounded lazy and deceptive, i was totally on board.

let me know when you start reading!
